Position Core Role:
Utilize engineering knowledge and background to assess supplier candidates and select and evaluate supplier tooling cost proposals for plastic parts used on future new models.
Review suppliers’ process design and tool construction methods and negotiate cost ensuring best practice is utilized to achieve cost target. Obtain and review 3D data from designer and determine how the tool(s) would be made/manufactured based on design of the part(s). Receive drawings in CATIA, figure out shape, key dimensions and tool line up association. Identify issues, concerns and problems relating to suppliers tooling designs and develop countermeasures to solve them. Develop and recommend ways to reduce costs relating to supplier tooling and achieve new model investment targets and develop revisions to existing cost calculation tables. Review cost calculations for reasonableness and sets target costs. Present supplier’s new model investment status to Purchasing Senior Management identifying issues and countermeasures to solve issues. Determine and evaluate the impact of design changes to exclusive investment during new model development. Participate in and support various plastic-related investment reduction projects and strategies. Challenge suppliers to change their tool design (when necessary). Partner with Buyer to achieve cost targets relating to tools created by suppliers. Understand the processes related with tool creation (plastics, mold equipment, hydraulic pressure, etc.) and complete quality checks of tools created. Participate in various Plastic related investment reduction projects and review cost calculations for reasonableness and set target costs. Review supplier’s process, die construction and negotiate with the supplier to cost target. Determine the impact of design change to exclusive investment during new model development.
Review new model part specification and set target costs internally with new model design team. Support tooling and part supplier meetings and negotiations related to target achievement, cost reducing and related matters. Support team internal development activities for cost tables, investment analysis of tools used for similar models. Support future model planning and strategy development to improve existing conditions. Review supplier exclusive investment proposals, quotations and processes.
Minimum of five years of automotive plastics tooling experience including experience with tooling construction, cost and design. Previous experience with Japanese companies, preferred but not required.
Knowledge of different ways to make tools (volume, quality level, difficulty of part, etc.). Understanding of plastics molding construction and related costs, target and cost table development. Knowledge of plastic injection process.
Ability to read drawings (blue prints).
Cost negotiation experience.
Strong analytical skills.
Windows Software (PowerPoint, Excel, etc.).
Good interpersonal communication skills.
Presentation experience (PowerPoint).
High initiative required due to difficulty of collecting necessary details to analyze investment level.
Flexibility – ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously and meet project deadlines.
Working knowledge of CAD software (preferably CATIA V5).
